Pupils took part in the school’s first poetry competition to mark National Poetry Day, on Thursday 2 October.
All children from Year 1 to Year 6, were asked to learn and recite a poem of their choice, with three finalists selected from each year group.
The final round of the Poetry Competition, held on National Poetry Day, was adjudicated by Mrs Ffion Robinson, Head of the Junior Department at Lady Eleanor Holles Junior School, and saw the finalists compete for the Key Stage 1 Poetry Cup and the Key Stage 2 Poetry Cup.
Each child was also awarded a score out of 20 for their recital, contributing to a House Poetry Competition Trophy, which was awarded to Fairmile for achieving the highest collective score.
Reception pupils also enjoyed taking part in Poetry Day Celebrations, learning poems for their own recitals and earning themselves a certificate of participation.
Mr Mike Harrison, Headteacher, said “It has been marvellous to see the children engaging so eagerly in the competition; they have giggled at the funny poems they have learned and heard and revelled in the beauty of poetry, building confidence through their performance and sharing in the joy of a whole-school event.”
“The initiative has been a great success and I am glad I was not required to pick the winners, such has been the very high standard!”
