This morning the school gathered for our annual remembrance assembly, followed by an act of remembrance at 11.00am.
The focus of the assembly this year was the poppy – what it signifies, why it is used and why it is important for us to remember.
The assembly included some time for the children to think and discuss with each other, whereas the act of remembrance was a more solemn occasion, with the children observing the two minute silence in order to show respect to those who have been injured, killed or lost loved ones in wars or other conflicts.
As well as building historical knowledge, the period of remembrance enables the children to develop their understanding of how respect for other people and tolerance of the beliefs of others can help to prevent future conflicts from occurring.
Further activities around the theme of remembrance have also taken place in the classrooms this week and our Year 5 Art Scholars shared their skills with Reception, to create a beautiful display of painted poppies along the glass wall in the school hall.
