Year 2 visit Imber Court

To complement their topic on "The Local Area", Year 2 enjoyed a trip to see the Police Horses at Imber Court this week. We walked from school, with our clipboards at the ready, to spot key features along the way. The children were being very observant and noticed many of the local services that we have near school including shops, post boxes, a golf course, the church and pond.

Once we reached Imber Court, we were met with wonderful hospitality at the Police Horse training centre. First, we were taken to the stables and were allowed to say hello to the lovely horses there; they were very friendly and nuzzled us enthusiastically. Then we saw the food storage and learned about what they eat. It was then on to the farrier who showed us how horseshoes are heated and banged into shape for each horse. We moved on to the training arena and watched the trainee horses being put through their paces with incredibly skilled riders. As the horses must get used to loud noises and flying debris, the children were encouraged to shout at them and throw tennis balls...not a single horse flinched!

Finally, we had a look around the Mounted Division museum and heard many interesting facts about the horses. Year 2 showed their inquisitive nature and desire to learn by asking many interesting questions and were beaming with excitement for the whole morning as they learned about these magnificent creatures.
