Years 3 and 4 enjoy a trip to the Natural History Museum

Years 3 and 4 enjoy a trip to the Natural History Museum

Lower Key Stage Two had an exciting day visiting the Natural History Museum last week to support their new topic of dinosaurs. Years 3 and 4 spent the day learning about the way dinosaurs lived and explored the reasons why we are still finding out exciting facts about dinosaurs today.

We spent the morning in the dinosaur exhibition which gave us an insight into how dinosaurs survived during the Mesozoic era and the children's learning is now inspiring the writing of their information texts. Some of the children are writing about the life-cycle of a dinosaur, while others have decided to focus on the hunting and defence mechanisms dinosaurs used to survive. To end the morning, the children came face to face with a life size T-rex and imagined what it would be like as a reporter encountering their first experience of dinosaurs.

After lunch we attended a workshop where the children discovered the importance of fossils and how they have taught us so much about the lives of dinosaurs. Using microscopes and visualisers, they managed to study the fossils in detail as well as predict where the different fossils may have come from. This workshop then inspired recent Science lessons where the children studied the process of fossilisation.

Years 3 and 4 all left the Natural History Museum inspired, excited and ready to use all they had learnt over the course of their dinosaur topic.
