Year 3 Learn About King Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace

On Monday, 3M hopped on the train from Thames Ditton to spend a glorious, sunny day at Hampton Court Palace. Needless to say, everyone was excited to spend the day learning about Henry VIII, the Tudors, and the history surrounding the palace.

Upon arrival, we were greeted in the main courtyard by Thomas Seymour and set about exploring the Tudor apartments.
It was here that we got to see the main attraction, Henry VIII. We had to clear a way for him to walk down, but he didn’t speak to any of us, he was far too busy talking to Thomas Seymour about important business of the Crown. Further round the rooms, we entered the Royal Chapel where Henry married one of his six wives. It was here that we saw a copy of King Henry’s crown.

Our first activity was learning about Tudor explorers and we all gained a great amount from this, we even learnt some Latin! We discovered how hard it was for sailors and merchants on the sea with undiscovered land, pirates and sea monsters all contributing to a ships downfall. After learning so much it was only right that we all relaxed on the grass eating our lunch in the sunshine.

So, after a relaxing lunch, off we went to explore Henry VIII’s quite incredible kitchens. He used these kitchens to regularly feed 600 people a day, and on both occasions he gave them a roast dinner. That meant that the ovens had to be big. In fact, they were so big that the whole class could stand in the oven and there was still room to move. This helped us all to see the size of the task for the cooks.

The tour was really informative and fun. It was a great day out and enjoyed by all.
