Pupils in Years 5 and 6 recently enjoyed a residential trip to Normandy, France.

As well as improving their French skills during their visit, the children had the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the events that led to the end of World War Two and VE Day.

The Key Stage 2 pupils visited a World War Two cemetery in Normandy, as well as visiting Pegasus Bridge, ahead of the 71st anniversary of the Pegasus Bridge landings by British troops on 6 June 1944.

Isabel Rosser, aged 10, said: "It was incredible to think how brave the troops were to be sent on a mission where they were plunged into darkness. Although it was great to hear how successful the missions were, I could not believe the age of some of the soldiers who died, particularly as a few were too young to be allowed to fight in the first place."

Mr Mike Harrison, Headteacher at Weston Green School said: “Here at Weston Green we recognise the importance of offering activities for pupils that go beyond the standard curriculum and take learning outside of the classroom. This year’s residential trip to Normandy provided a meaningful experience for the children and allowed them to learn more about the significance and the reality of events which took place 70 years ago and to remember the British troops who were lost.”
