Year 5 Rise to the Challenge at Claremont

Friday 13th might be unlucky for some, but not for Milo, Issy, Jessica and Scarlett from 5H, who were lucky enough to be taken by Mrs. Hawkins to a Maths Adventure Day at Claremont Fan Court School, where they joined 50 other able young mathematicians for a morning of maths challenges.

They worked with children from other local schools to solve puzzles and problems, including how to package a single Pringle to travel through the post, withstanding a heavy weight being placed on it, and being dropped from a great height!

In the stunning surroundings of Claremont, they certainly rose to the challenges set and found out that maths can be a huge amount of fun. When asked what the best part of the day was Issy had no hesitation:

“The calculator treasure hunt was brilliant! We had to run around the grounds of the school solving maths challenges on calculators.”

Meanwhile, back at Weston Green, the rest of Year 5 joined Year 6 to undertake their own maths challenge – who could build the highest newspaper tower which would hold an airflow ball? They worked in teams on a limited budget and decide whether to opt for the prize for height and stability or go for the most unusual design prize. The winning team of Tilly, Alex, Ella Mae and Zoe built the highest – if slightly wobbly tower! Alex said, “I really enjoyed the design element of the challenge!”
