Year 5 have been working hard in English on Michael Morpurgo's wonderful story Friend or Foe and thought it would be good to meet some of the people who had first-hand experience of living through World War II as children.
So a trip to the Home of Compassion in Thames Ditton was organised, which enabled Year 5 to share some of their writing with the residents and talk to them about their memories.
Sarani said, "When we went to the Home of Compassion I learnt a variety of things, but something that came up a number of times quite surprised me. This was that most of the residents said that they had a great time as evacuees. I would have thought that it was a sad thing as it was a horrible time in history."
Lucas added, "It was really interesting to hear from people who were alive during the wartime, and learn how lucky we are nowadays. Everyone was willing to answer our questions and did it so kindly. Everyone had a story to tell and they were all as interesting as the other."
