Churchill’s chilling voice boomed into Year 6’s classroom to announce the end of the war! Germany had surrendered in Europe and despite the war continuing in Japan, Churchill gave us permission to have a short period of celebration - VE Day. So celebrate we did! We set about preparing cakes made from a genuine wartime recipe using rationed ingredients and celebratory snacks made from crackers, spam and corned beef. All were surprisingly well received by our wartime children. We played wartime parlour games and listened to music of the time before learning several swing dances by our very own expert, Mrs Griffin! We were also treated to her gorgeous rendition of Vera Lynn’s The White Cliffs of Dover.
From Year 6’s recounts of the day:
“Rock cakes made with apple puree instead of eggs were the best I’ve ever tasted!”
“The dancing was so fast!”
“I most liked it when we played wartime games because some of them I had never heard of before I’d now love to play those games with my family!”
“It was a brilliant day as we got to have fun while still having educational lessons.”
