It might be Christmas but there’s still time for maths in year 6! Mrs Hawkins set her year 6 maths class the tough problem of finding a formula to work out how many presents she would get on the 30th, 50th or even 100th day of Christmas (should it go on that long!), based on the song “Twelve Days of Christmas”.
Adam, Sophia and Tom were declared the overall winners for their very tidy solution:
(n +1) x n
2
But Joe, Faren and Rorke also found an equally successful, if wordier, formula. Mrs Hawkins would get 465 presents on the 50th day! What a lot of presents, and what amazing mathematicians.
