Artists at Work

Year 4 pupils have looked forward to their art lessons each week this term where they have had the opportunity to explore and develop their artistic talent. They enjoyed creating self-portraits, using digital photographs as a starting point. Having covered one half of their photograph, they then skilfully sketched their own interpretation of the other half with some excellent likenesses being created.

They have also enjoyed studying the works of famous still life artists such as Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gaugin, to help inspire their own attempts at still life observational drawing. Before creating their sketches, pupils began by imagining the objects they were going to sketch were transparent. This made it easier for them to see the shape position and proportions of each one. They then added the details of line, shape and shadow before building up tone, step by step, to build the 3 dimensional form with light and shade.

Pupils are very proud of their finished pieces and are keen to continue perfecting their skills using their sketchbooks for additional observational drawing practice.

Year 4 are already working on their next project which is learning about the Tree of Life paintings of Gustav Klimt before producing their own versions of this special work.
