On Friday, Years 3 and 4 competed against Ewell Castle in an athletics meeting. As usual, the children were in high spirits, looking forward to the challenge of competing against a larger school. In the sprints, Weston Green held their own, with some excellent standout performances from Sam, Sean, Atticus, Amelie and Connie. From that moment on, everyone knew that it was going to be a tight finish.
As the field and track events were completed one by one, the points became closer and closer. In fact, with only the relays remaining, one Weston Green team and one Ewell Castle were level on points at the top of the standings.
With Weston Green finishing third in the first two races, they went into the final race knowing that victory would put them in with a chance of winning the meeting. Sam gave us the perfect start, and the change-over to Holly was perfect, the lead increasing with every step. Holly’s change to Joe was also excellent and Joe set off determined to increase the lead further. Could they do it? The track was damp from the rain, Anaya was there, waiting, anticipating the final stretch to secure victory. Then, disaster! A slip on the change-over left Anaya battling for second place, which pushed her to the limit and she was able to make second place. It was a fantastic event, which taught the children so much about their limits and abilities. It also teaches the children how to conduct themselves in defeat as well as in victory; one of life’s key lessons. Well done to all involved!
