Holm Oak

Posted on: 19 Jan 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Early Years, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2

On Tuesday 13th January just before morning assembly was due to start, a large limb of the holm oak tree came crashing down, landing on the ground and also partly on the roof of the hall. It made a very loud noise as it fell, but miraculously caused very little damage, no windows were broken and no one was in the vicinity as it came down.

The building was evacuated - Kindergarten took up residence in the Music Studio and Reception in 2E’s classroom; 2E relocated up to the Art Room (2E and 2N have taken turns up there). Courtney and her team moved into the staff room to prepare lunches and the school ran very much as normal, albeit in a smaller space!

While we will be very sad to lose the holm oak, we are very pleased that Elmbridge Council has agreed that it would not be safe to do anything other than remove the whole tree and, at the time of writing, we are waiting for that to happen in a few days time.

The situation has presented some interesting opportunities – Year 1 are learning about news reports, so they have been able to both write and film some reports about the tree which you can read or watch in another section of the newsletter.

We have also contacted some artists who sculpt from wood to see if we can work with them to use some of the wood from the tree to make some pieces for our outdoor area, hopefully involving the pupils in the design and possibly execution.

So – an accident which we could not have foreseen has presented opportunities for the pupils to learn in various areas of the curriculum and we will update you when we can as these progress.

The staff, children and parents have all been magnificent in coping with the changes in routine and supporting each other, so a very heartfelt thank you to you all.
