On the evening of Thursday 29th January many parents of children in KS1 and KS2 returned to school to find out more about how we teach maths at WGS. The evening was led by Mrs Hawkins, who leads this subject, and is our Director of Studies, and she was assisted by colleagues in both key stages. After a brief introduction, which outlined the way teaching in maths has changed and the need for us as a nation to be as unaccepting of innumeracy as we are of illiteracy, the parents went to workshops appropriate to their child’s key stage.
Parents of KS1 had great fun participating in a carousel of very “hands on” practical maths activities, while those of KS2 children got down to the nuts and bolts of grid multiplication and using expanded and contracted methods to add and subtract! There was a great atmosphere in both. 'Thanks for such an informative and interesting evening,' emailed one parent, while another commented, ‘Thank you for this evening. It was so useful to see the different strategies we can use at home.'
