Last week maths met history in a head-on collision of workshops, quizzes and homework challenges. It began with two fabulous performances from the Hobgoblin theatre company who treated KS1 and KS2 to their “History of Maths” show. Pupils were thoroughly engaged as Mr Maths, accused of being boring and useless, was put on trial. He proved – by travelling on an amazing voyage through history – how essential to the human race he really is. The children loved the sketches covering a range of periods in history from the Greeks to the Titanic, and were constantly challenged to use their maths vocabulary and skills.
They have also been competing with each other to solve quizzes full of questions about maths and history and producing some amazing homework about famous mathematicians. The week was fun, engaging and demonstrated beautifully that WGS really is a place where our children learn “with joyful enthusiasm”.
