Slimetastic science day for Year 2!

Posted on: 08 Jun 2017 by Weston Green School | Category: Year 2

Wow, what a hands-on day we've had!  This morning we had our workshop all about electricity where we learned how electricity works and made some electric circuits to power a fan, a buzzer and a bulb.  Then it was back to the classroom to find out about non-newtonian liquids. We learned that Isaac Newton investigated solids and liquids and realised why they act differently ... it's all to do with the molecules being packed tightly or loosely.  We pretended to be molecules to understand it!  Then we made two non-newtonian liquids which act like a solid AND a liquid ... oobleck and slime.  They look liquid and fill their container but when we applied pressure by touching them they acted like a solid.  We could thump our oobleck without making a splash!  We had great fun pouring our oobleck onto our desks and then even though it looked like a liquid, we picked it up and put it back into our bowl.  It was amazing.

The fun continued in the afternoon where we made the colours of the rainbow in a petri dish. We created patterns around the edge of the dish and added water using a pipette drop by drop and let the magic happen. We closely watched as the colours of each skittle diffused into the water and travelled towards the centre of the dish.

We are super scientists in Year Two!
