In our History this term, Year 2 have been studying the life of Florence Nightingale as part of our Famous people and events topic. The Freshwater Theatre Company re-enacted the life and times of Florence Nightingale. The children interacted with enthusiasm using costumes and props. They already knew a great deal about this famous lady and displayed their knowledge, but this workshop really brought history alive and enhanced their understanding of this famous nurse. The children thoroughly enjoyed the activities involved, including the role play and were able to use their imaginations to the full. The boys took on the role of wounded soldiers, while the girls became Florence Nightingale’s wonderful team of nurses, who helped in healing and curing the dying soldiers. Here are some of the comments made by the children which highlight the impact the drama workshop made.
“I would like to be a nurse. She was a brave lady.”
“I learnt lots and I really enjoyed it.”
“I loved every minute of it and want to visit the Florence Nightingale museum in London.”
