The school hall was buzzing with excitement on Thursday as everyone eagerly anticipated the final of the school’s first house poetry competition. All of the children from Years 1-6 had had to learn and recite a poem to their peers as part of the first round and the teachers were astounded by the talent across the school: choosing the finalists was a very tricky task and extra teachers were called upon to assist. Reception children also played their part through learning a verse of a poem and performing it in their own recital earlier on in the week, where they each received a certificate to celebrate their achievements.
On the day the children did themselves proud as they bravely took to the stage and delivered their poems at a high performance standard. They impressed the adults with their excellent projection, clear voices and creative performance skills. The range of poems meant that there was a wonderful mix of tone and the judge, Mrs Ffion Robinson from Lady Eleanor Holles School, had a tough task in selecting the winners, After much deliberating, Mrs Robinson chose: James S in Year 1 who won the KS1 cup and Clement in Year 5 who won the KS2 cup. Milo and Scarlett were over the moon to receive the House Poetry Competition Trophy on behalf of Fairmile; all the children in Years 1-6 received house points for their recitals in the first round adding to an average total for their house.
The winners get to to put their respective cups on the mantelpiece for a year before returning them for next year’s competition.
