Year 4 A and B Hockey teams ended the first half of the spring term on a winning note when they travelled to Staines Prep School for a lively mixed 7 a-side contest.
It was amazing to see how the hockey skills of both our boys and girls had improved since their meeting on the same ground a year ago. Right from the start, through to the final whistle, both the A and the B teams provided an exceptional display of running, hitting and some missing!
WGS dominated the play in both matches
Overall there was some very good evidence of spatial awareness and skilful distribution of the ball across all corners of the pitch. Although Staines fought hard to penetrate our defence, no goals were conceded in either game due to the solid and relentless WGS back line. We dominated the second half in both games, taking control and producing some well-worked moves that were confidently finished off.
Goal opportunities were taken by both our teams, with Nathan and Charlie getting three each for the A team and Joseph and Lily adding a further one each to bring their final score to 8-0.
The B team also fought hard to find the back of the net. Lacksha and Evie put two each past the Staines keeper. Perseverance also paid off for Junpyo, Jak and Ashani who added to the victory with one each.
Special mention must go to Junpyo whose determination and tireless running ensured maximum possession for his team, and to Jak, a newcomer to Hockey this term, but who showed very deft reverse stick skills which certainly confused the opposition.
Brilliant work by both teams, showing encouraging signs for the future of hockey at WGS!
