As the Easter term draws to a close amidst a packed programme of House Hockey and Music competitions, the Swimming Gala, and Spring Concerts, spare a thought for year 4 pupils who have been busy poring over poetry books and story books as they make final choices in preparation for their English Speaking Board examination which they will be taking in the first half of next term.
The English Speaking Board provides accredited qualifications in a variety of Spoken English assessment programmes. The assessments, which will be conducted here at school by a visiting examiner, consist of several sections for each child, including a presentation on a subject which interests them, without using notes; the recitation of a poem by heart and reading aloud from a favourite book.
The pupils have all made their final choices on poems, books and subjects for their presentation and will go off to spend quality time polishing their performances during the Easter holidays. Amidst the excitement of sharing their choices with their friends and enjoying listening to each others’ poems and readings, there have of course been some feelings of trepidation in the air. The whole experience will, however, prove valuable for each child as it will help develop their self-confidence and promote effective, and constructive oral communication skills for all of them.
