In History, Year 5 have been learning about the Mary Rose which rests just one hour away, so a trip south to the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth was imperative. The day did not fall short of any expectations! The pupils first visited the Learning Centre where they handled a wide range of replica artefacts to investigate how the officers and crew lived. They stepped back into time and dressed in Tudor clothes, the officers clearly looking far more impressive than the crew.
It is hard for us to imagine a world without Sat Nav. The pupils took part in activities to assess just how good Tudor navigation was. They used traverse boards to record their course and speed and, with the help of maps and charts, were able to plot a safe course for the Mary Rose into Portsmouth Harbour.
After lunch we visited the museum where the ship captured everybody’s attention. We viewed the four decks through the viewing windows along the walls. From large cannons to coins and tiny dice were rescued from the seabed alongside the ship’s hull and it was an amazing experience to see the exhibitions of thousands of artefacts.
It was a very informative visit and the whole experience gave us the most significant insight into life on board a Tudor ship.
