Character Education

Character Education at Weston Green School

At Weston Green, our vision for character education goes beyond academic achievement and prioritises the personal growth of every child. We guide our pupils to discover who they are, who they aspire to be, and how to develop the positive traits needed to become the best versions of themselves.

We define character as the traits and values that empower children to exercise practical wisdom: doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason.

How Character Flourishes: Caught, Taught, and Sought

1. Character is Caught

Our staff lead by example. Through strong relationships, classroom interactions, assemblies, and break-time conversations, children learn to navigate right from wrong. Teachers actively capture “virtue teachable moments”, whether encouraging resilience when a pupil faces a tough academic challenge or instilling sportsmanship on the games field.

2. Character is Taught

Character is a core component of our curriculum, explicitly woven into our bespoke PSHE and PRE lessons. Drawing on world-class resources from the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, our whole-school framework nurtures personal growth, emotional literacy, and social responsibility.

3. Character is Sought

Beyond the classroom, children actively seek character development through our vibrant extracurricular and after-school programs. This values-driven approach equips pupils with the skills and confidence to thrive in a complex, diverse world.

Reflective Character Journaling

To build deep self-awareness, pupils participate in structured Reflective Journaling. These dedicated sessions give children space to explore virtues like kindness, courage, and resilience.

By reflecting on their experiences, pupils develop self-leadership, positive behaviour, and emotional maturity.

The Impact on Our Pupils

Since introducing reflective journaling, we have seen a transformation in pupil self-awareness and well-being:

  • Improved Mental Health: Pupil voice feedback highlights greater confidence and emotional clarity.

  • The “Ripple Effect”: Children gain a clearer understanding of how their actions and choices positively impact the people around them.

  • Virtue Literacy: Guided by our THRIVE Character Charter, we embed core virtue vocabulary across the entire school, from our youngest learners in Little Prep to our oldest pupils in Upper Prep.

What Makes Our Approach Stand Out?

We enrich our lessons with real-world dilemmas, role-play, interactive discussions, and stories that spark meaningful debate. This practical approach helps pupils build phronesis (practical wisdom) and reasoning skills, turning abstract values into everyday habits.

Making a Difference Every Day

Research shows that parents want their children to be happy, good-natured, and capable of forming strong relationships. By anchoring our curriculum in our core values of Ambition, Curiosity, and Kindness, we create a supportive environment where children feel connected and valued.

Our bespoke character education ensures pupils leave Weston Green School with strong moral awareness, exceptional interpersonal skills, and the foundation to live fulfilling, virtuous lives.
