The Academic Journey

As a dedicated prep school Weston Green has a clear and defined approach to academic progress and monitoring. We prepare most of our pupils to sit the 11+ entrance exams but, regardless of each pupil’s onward journey, the skills they obtain from a Weston Green education provides them with skills for life. Weston Green pupils learn to be self-motivated learners who see challenges as opportunities. They are eager to push themselves and recognise that our best learning occurs when we are not afraid to fail.

Reception

Reception at Weston Green School is a very special place for any child to start their formal education journey.  The Reception experience encourages a passion for learning from an early age and of paramount importance is ensuring the children love coming to school, develop social experiences and have an abundance of curiosity to find things out.  That is exactly what we provide for our children at Weston Green.

An excellent framework recognises the importance of play and how it underpins both development and learning for young and inquisitive minds. Through spontaneous and adult-led play, we observe how children’s intellectual, creative, physical, social and emotional development impacts on their learning and we plan further challenges and opportunities for them to extend their knowledge and understanding.

Years 1, 2 and 3

Throughout Lower Prep (Y1-3), academic learning is expertly entwined with engaging topics to ensure that progress is rapid but school remains fun.

In addition to developing and deepening understanding and experiences in the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics, our curriculum is enriched with a wide range of activities and experiences. During Lower Prep, children are introduced to more subject specialists including computing, drama and art in addition to the French, sport, yoga and music they experience during their Little Prep education.

Years 4, 5 and 6

As children progress into Upper Prep, their timetable evolves to reflect an even more enriched and balanced curriculum. There is an increasing variety of specialist teaching, with dedicated subject specialists for Science, Mathematics, English, Humanities, French, Art, Music, Drama, Computing, and P.E.

We continue to prepare our pupils for their 11+ exams with structured sessions in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, arithmetic, and a responsive programme like BOFA, which adapts to individual needs in spelling, grammar, and mathematical skills. Pupils also engage with our bespoke SkillQuest programme, which focuses on future skills such as creativity, leadership, and resilience.

In addition to academic development, we aim to prepare pupils for life beyond their exams. Through collaborative projects and thematic learning, they develop the confidence and curiosity to explore the world around them.
