Starting School in Thames Ditton & Esher: State vs. Independent Prep
Choosing where your child begins their educational journey is one of the biggest milestones you will face as a parent. If you live in the Elmbridge or Kingston area, including Thames Ditton, Esher, and Surbiton, you are fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic educational choices.
However, navigating the local school landscape can feel overwhelming. Many parents find themselves caught at a crossroads: Should we apply for a local state primary school, or should we consider an independent preparatory school?
While state schools offer strong local community connections, navigating strict catchment areas, fluctuating Ofsted ratings, and larger class sizes can prompt families to seek alternative pathways. If you are currently weighing up your options, here is a guide to understanding the differences—and how a nurturing, independent prep school like Weston Green could be the perfect fit for your child.
1. The Catchment Dilemma vs. a Guaranteed Community
For state primary schools in Surrey, proximity is everything. Catchment areas shift year-on-year based on local demand, leaving many families anxious about whether they will secure a place at their closest preferred school.
Weston Green School is nestled in a beautiful village setting opposite the Thames Ditton duck pond and our school is built entirely around community. Because we are non-selective at entry, our community is warm, down-to-earth, and inclusive. Instead of worrying about arbitrary boundary lines on a council map, families who join us gain a guaranteed, stable, and deeply connected community from day one.
Choosing to secure a place at Weston Green Prep School puts the control firmly back in your hands and releases you from months of anxious worry about whether a place will be offered to your child at your preferred state primary school. Our Reception on-boarding process is thorough yet gentle and our families recently rated it highly in our annual survey:
“I think WGS has done a brilliant job with their programme of events to transition the children (& their parents) – I cannot see how you would improve this, well done!”- Reception 2026 parent
Once you register for a place at Weston Green School you can sit back and relax as we will contact you at regular intervals to keep you informed and up to date with the on-boarding process. We have a series of taster sessions that allow our new pupils to build a familiarity with the classroom and adults who will be teaching them in September, ensuring that starting ‘big school’ is something you can all look forward to together.
2. Class Sizes and Individual Attention
With state primary schools often managing classes of up to 30 children, even the most talented teachers face a logistical challenge when trying to tailor learning to every individual child.
We believe that no two learners are the same. Our smaller class sizes allow our teachers to deeply understand each child’s unique strengths, interests, and emotional needs. Whether your child is starting in our Little Prep nursery at age two or joining us further up the school, our personalized approach ensures they are stretched, supported, and celebrated. Rather than getting lost in the crowd, every child at Weston Green is given the individual space to shine.
Our school is deliberately structured to provide small teaching spaces for our teachers and teaching assistants to work with even smaller groups of children. Teaching groups of 4 or 6 enables those who need longer to grasp a concept the time and space to secure their understanding and it also allows teachers to stretch the minds of those who need more challenging tasks to take their understanding further. This ensures that every child gets the input and support that they need to make progress subject to their individual starting points.
3. A Bespoke Curriculum Built for the Modern World
State primary schools must adhere strictly to the National Curriculum, which can occasionally place heavy emphasis on rigid testing structures like KS2 SATs.
Independent prep schools have the freedom to innovate. At Weston Green, our unique Bright Beginnings curriculum in the early years goes far beyond national expectations, blending purposeful play with early literacy (via the Sounds-Write programme) and maths mastery.
As children grow, this academic ambition is woven together with our SkillQuest programme, designed to teach fundamental life skills: resilience, purpose, empathy, and critical thinking. Backed by our core pillars of Kindness, Curiosity, and Ambition, we don’t just teach children how to pass tests, we inspire them to love learning.
Our broad and varied curriculum keeps our pupils interested and engaged with their learning. From drama, sport and French, to SkillQuest, digital literacy and AI, our pupils have the opportunity to develop their understanding of core subjects (maths, English and science) across a variety of other lessons, ensuring that school days at Weston Green are exciting and engaging.
4. Expert Prep for the 11+ (Without the Pressure)
One of the most significant differences between state primary and independent prep schools is how they prepare children for the future. For families eyeing top grammar or independent senior schools in Surrey and Greater London, the 11+ transition can become a major source of family anxiety.
State schools are rarely equipped to provide dedicated, bespoke preparation for independent senior school entrance exams. At Weston Green, we take great pride in our Future Schools pathway. Our experienced staff are highly adept at preparing children for 11+ exams and interviews, managing their expectations while providing stability, security, and reassurance along the way.
Because we are entirely independent and not tied as a “feeder” to just one or two settings, we work hand-in-hand with parents to find the exact right fit senior school for their child, whether that is a top-tier local independent day school, a highly regarded state secondary, or a selective grammar school.
In 2025-2026, 100% of our Year 6 cohort were offered places by at least one of their shortlisted schools and 76% received an offer from every school to which they applied. Schools included Hampton School, Kingston Grammar School, St John’s Leatherhead, Reed’s School, Halliford School, Claremont Fan Court and others, and 8 places were offered by the Sutton and Tiffin Grammar School groups.
5. Seamless Continuity from Age 2 to 11
The transition from a standalone preschool or day nursery into a Reception class can be a daunting shift for a four-year-old, especially those who are particularly young within their cohort.
By choosing an all-through preparatory school, your child benefits from a single, continuous educational journey. A child starting in Little Prep becomes familiar with our school buildings, our dining hall, and our specialist teachers (who teach Music, French, Sport, and Mindfulness from the very beginning). By the time they step into Reception, they do so with absolute confidence and pride.
A parent of a child in our Little Prep nursery recently commented: “If the child already attends Nursery at WGS, I do not see the transition as a major change. They are already immersed into the school environment, and know the school routines & key staff members.”
But for those who do join us in Reception – whether that be from a nursery elsewhere or from being at home with a parent, family member or other childcare provider -we have established a gentle and consistent schedule of events designed to work at the pace of a four-year-old and allow each child to establish themselves and feel comfortable at school. To do this, we start early in the preceding year and build up to more regular opportunities for our pupils to visit and integrate with our pre-Reception children from Little Prep.
Our events include:
- Weekly soft-play sessions offering an opportunity to stay and play in our nursery, pre-Reception and Reception spaces.
- Taster sessions in March, May and June where the children meet their teacher and spend some time in their classroom.
- Teddy Bears’ Picnic in July offers an opportunity for families to meet each other and enjoy some quality time together in our lovely outside area.
