Newsies Production Wows Thames Ditton Audience

Newsies Jr proves to be a headline hit for Weston Green!

Each year, our Upper Prep pupils take on an ambitious production during the summer term, showcasing the abundance of musical and theatrical talent among pupils.

This year, the children have tackled Newsies Jr, which was an unknown work for many. However, that hasn’t stopped the children from getting into the spirit and delivering their performances with aplomb! With Year 6 pupils taking the lead parts, our Year 5 and Year 4 children have ably assisted in supporting and ensemble roles.

Disney’s Newsies JR. is a high-energy, 60-minute youth adaptation of the Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Set in 1899 New York City, it follows charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly as he unites fellow newsies to strike against powerful newspaper publishers who raise prices at the boys’ expense.

A taste of what’s to come

Our Upper Prep Production is an experience that all our pupils look forward to, whether they seek the spotlight, live and breath musical theatre or enjoy discovering how a stage manager keeps a show on track there is something for every child to learn.

Year 4 get their first taste of what’s to come as they provide volume and expression as the ensemble. In Year 5, our pupils take on some supporting roles on stage, as well as supporting vocals and as they enter Year 6 there is much excitement for the responsibility of taking on the lead roles and responsibilities.

New venue for outstanding performance

This year, the school has used the Vera Fletcher Hall for the first time and the children have benefited from the experience of a raked stage, professional lighting and sound and backstage areas, making the entire production feel professional and exciting. However, the biggest advantage in this particular week has been the air conditioning, keeping children and teachers cool during those demanding final rehearsals. No doubt our audience were delighted at the lower temperatures as well!
