The teaching of phonics is an essential part of every child’s schooling experience. Weston Green has recently invested in the Sounds-Write Phonics programme to ensure that as a school we are providing children with the highest level of phonics education. This new programme ensures that essential skills are acquired by the children and knowledge is taught in order for every child to become a successful and competent reader and writer. The process of children learning to read and write begins as early as when the children join our school and is developed year on year until children leave in Year 6. EYFS and KS1 have already implemented the new phonics programme within their daily phonics teaching and the impact on progress and attainment is already being seen.
We welcomed parents to our phonics workshop on Tuesday 20th September to give an insight into the Sounds-Write programme and how we have adapted our teaching to reflect this. It was a thought provoking session; highlighting the complexities that children face whilst learning to read and write and the importance of having the most appropriate programme in place to support young children on their reading journey.
