Upper Prep (Yr4 – Yr6)

Upper Prep Curriculum

As children progress into Upper Prep, their timetable evolves to reflect a more enriched and balanced curriculum. There is an increasing variety of specialist teaching, with dedicated subject specialists for Science, Mathematics, English, Humanities, French, Art, Music, Drama, Computing, and P.E.

We continue to prepare our pupils for their 11+ exams with structured sessions in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, arithmetic, and a responsive programme like BOFA, which adapts to individual needs in spelling, grammar, and mathematical skills. Pupils also engage with our bespoke SkillQuest programme, which focuses on future skills such as creativity, leadership, and resilience.

In addition to academic development, we aim to prepare pupils for life beyond their exams. Through collaborative projects and thematic learning, they develop the confidence and curiosity to explore the world around them.

Timetable Highlights

Upper Prep pupils benefit from a rich variety of lessons across the week, ensuring they receive a broad education:

  • Core Subjects: Dedicated English and Mathematics lessons occur daily, with an emphasis on problem-solving, grammar, and comprehension skills.
  • Specialist subjects: Lessons include Science, French, Music, Art, Drama, Computing, and P.E.
  • SkillQuest sessions: These take place on Fridays, focusing on life skills, personal development, and future preparedness.
  • Games afternoons: Pupils participate in sports and physical education sessions to enhance teamwork and physical wellbeing.
  • Thematic learning: Integrated sessions such as Geography, History, and PRE (Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics) bring the humanities alive.

The timetable is structured to provide a balance between academic rigour and opportunities for creative and physical expression. Breaks, lunchtime activities, and assemblies further support pupils’ wellbeing and personal growth.

Enrichment Opportunities

In addition to their weekly lessons, Upper Prep pupils enjoy a variety of immersive experiences that enrich their learning:

  • Upper Prep production: A collaborative drama event showcasing pupils’ talents.
  • Residential trips: Memorable adventures that foster independence and teamwork.
  • Entrepreneurial business programme: In their final year, pupils undertake an exciting project to develop enterprise skills.
  • Thematic experiences: From dressing up for historical days to exploring local museums, pupils connect their learning with real-world applications.

When our Upper Prep pupils leave us, they do so as confident, compassionate individuals, equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in secondary school and beyond.
