Sport Victories at WGS

Posted: 9th February 2024

What a few weeks we’ve had at Weston Green School in terms of sport!

Hockey

National plate runners up at the boys ISA Hockey tournament. A team of 9 boys represented Weston Green at the recent ISA national competition at the Lee Valley National Hockey Centre. For many of the boys, it was the first time playing at the Olympic hockey stadium. They really were fantastic ambassadors for our school. Showing teamwork, sportsmanship and determination. Ending up as runners up in their groups purely down to goal difference, and this was despite keeping a clean sheet in all of their group games. The afternoon saw them play in the plate competition, where again some fantastic defending led to more clean sheets. The nail biting final came down to penalty shuffles, which they were unlucky to lose. With so many year 5 and year 4 players in this team. We have high hopes for the future.

On Friday 9th February, Weston Green School entered 2 U11 teams into the Bellevue Hockey Tournament. The teams consisted of year 6 and year 5 girls. Both teams progressed to the quarter finals. It was a tense WGS vs WGS match. The winners went on to beat Staines Prep in the semi final, and then Rosemead in the Final. It’s the first time we’ve ever won this and we’re very proud of all of the girls.

Netball

In netball, the girls traveled to the ISA London South Netball competition held at Wellesley Haddon Dene School in Broadstairs. The squad performed brilliantly, they were unbeaten in their group in the morning and so progressed to the quarter finals as group winners. They were then unstoppable in the knock out matches, winning the quarter final and semi final convincingly. The final was a close affair against Rosemead Prep, but WGS pulled ahead and were crowned winners of the tournament. History makers, this is the first time ever WGS have won this tournament and only the second time they have qualified for the national finals…….

Cross Country

Finally we had our house cross country event, with all children in years 3-6 running. The younger children ran 1.5km and the older children completed a 2.0km course. Well done to all, whether they walked, ran, jogged or skipped, they all completed the course and were enthusiastically cheered on by their classmates. .

We are incredibly proud of all the children at WGS, and from year 2 upwards, every child represents the school in fixtures against other local schools. Building on the skills they practice in their weekly games sessions.

We have an equally busy second half of the spring term with ISA cross country, ISA national netball and ISA mixed hockey, as well as hockey fixtures for every child in years 3-6
