Rail Safe Friendly Initiative for Child Safety

Posted: 18th March 2024

We are thrilled to announce that Weston Green School has joined the Rail Safe Friendly movement, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing safety awareness in schools and reducing railway trespassing among children.

Launched on March 31st, 2023, by the Heads of Safety from Network Rail and South Western Railway, this initiative offers schools the opportunity to achieve Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels of recognition for their commitment to rail safety.

As part of our dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our children, we are proud to have achieved the Bronze Level. This marks an important milestone in our journey towards fostering a safer environment for our children.

Key Messages:

The Rail Safe Friendly movement emphasises three crucial messages about rail safety:

  • Railway Tracks Are Dangerous: It’s essential to convey to our children the inherent dangers associated with being on railway tracks.
  • Trains Can Run Unexpectedly: Even when not scheduled or displayed on station information, trains may be in operation, underscoring the importance of caution around railway lines.
  • Live Electricity on Railways: On the Wessex and South Western Railway network, trains are powered by a ‘third rail’ carrying 750 volts of electricity, always live, even when trains are not running. This highlights the constant need for vigilance near railway infrastructure.

In our pursuit of safety excellence, we are now actively working towards achieving the Silver Level. As part of our efforts to engage parents and carers, we encourage you to access the FREE rail safety broadcast available here. Your involvement at home is key in reinforcing rail safety awareness among our children.

At Weston Green, we extend our appreciation to our school community for their unwavering support in this important initiative. Together, we can continue to prioritise the safety and well-being of our children, both within and beyond the school gates.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping our children safe.
