At Weston Green School, we believe in nurturing ambition and curiosity through meaningful, real-world learning experiences. This week, our Year 6 pupils had the privilege of meeting an extraordinary visitor as part of their SkillQuest Playmaker Quest session – Paralympian Toby Gold.
Toby is not only a silver medallist from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, but also a European champion and World Championship silver medallist in wheelchair racing. His visit offered pupils a rare opportunity to learn firsthand what it takes to compete at the highest level in international sport.
A Powerful Lesson in Perseverance, Mindset and Motivation
Toby spoke with warmth and honesty about his journey into elite sport, sharing the physical and mental challenges he faced and overcame along the way. He explained how setbacks shaped his mindset, the strategies he uses to stay focused, and the influence of role models in his life.
The children asked insightful and thoughtful questions, clearly inspired by his story and linked to their quest goals: to learn about strategy in sport and the impact of sporting role models. Topics ranged from the intensity of Paralympic training schedules to how it feels to represent your country on the global stage.
Bringing the Future Skills Curriculum to Life
Toby’s visit brought our Future Skills curriculum to life, embodying the values we promote through our SkillQuest programme – resilience, self-belief and ambition. It was a truly inspirational session that will remain with our pupils for years to come.
We are incredibly grateful to Toby for taking the time to share his journey and for inspiring the next generation to believe in themselves and their potential.
