Game On! Weston Green Pupils Celebrate Skills, Sport and Strategy
This term, Weston Green School has been alive with energy and enthusiasm as pupils across the school embraced our latest SkillQuest theme: Game On! A mid point highlight has been our exciting Game On Live event. The showcase gave children a chance to share their creativity, collaboration and curiosity with visiting families.
From Reception to Year 6, each year group explored a unique quest, developing future-ready skills through sport, movement and media.
Reception: Dynamic Dinosaurs and Movement Magic
Reception pupils embarked on an energetic quest to discover how we move our bodies in different ways. Their highlight? Designing and completing a thrilling “Dyno Park” course, where creative movement strategies were needed to avoid being “bitten” by dinosaurs!
The challenge built children’s gross motor skills, imagination and confidence, as they crawled, jumped and adapted their techniques with every attempt, showing true teamwork, creativity and being adaptable.
Year 1: Animal Olympics and Storytelling in Motion
Slithering snakes, leaping kangaroos and all kinds of imaginative movement featured in Year 1’s “Animal Olympics”. Pupils created their own medals and movement stories, blending sport with storytelling.
This hands-on quest developed coordination, listening and collaboration, while building confidence through shared creativity and joyful physical play.
Years 2 & 3: Designing and Reimagining Games
The Design Quest gave Years 2 and 3 the chance to rethink the games they love. From ideation to testing and refining, pupils worked in teams to create innovative new games, showing creative thinking, teamwork and demonstrating fairness and ethical behaviour.
Their final creations were proudly presented at Game On Live – celebrating not only fun and imagination, but also the ownership and collaborative effort behind them.
Year 4: Busting Sports Myths with Science
Year 4 became scientific investigators, tackling popular sporting myths such as “Does sugar really give you energy?” or “Is height an advantage in netball?” or ‘Does having a positive attitude improve performance?” By conducting experiments and analysing results, pupils developed critical thinking and digital literacy.
An inspiring session with former rugby player Jamie Moon offered real-life examples of sports myths in action, bringing the learning to life.
Year 5: Lights, Camera, Sports Report!
In the Media Quest, Year 5 pupils transformed into sports journalists. They researched inspirational charity races like The Sue Ryder Cup and created exciting race reports using tools like Canva. From pre-recorded commentary to dynamic sports intros, this project nurtured digital literacy, ethical thinking and visual storytelling to develop a lifelong curiosity.
With tight deadlines and real-world constraints, pupils demonstrated resilience, adaptability and teamwork under pressure.
Year 6: Strategic Thinking and Sporting Values
Year 6 took on the Playmaker Quest, diving into the strategic and ethical side of sport. Conversations with Paralympian Toby Gold and football coach Kit Symons helped pupils reflect on motivation, fair play and leadership.
Through research, debate and creativity, pupils designed relay races with a twist – highlighting integrity and strategy over simply winning.
Celebrating Learning Through Sport
Game On Live was a joyful celebration of everything our pupils have explored this half term. Thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us to see the learning in action, and many even took part themselves! We’re incredibly proud of the creativity, collaboration and confidence our pupils have shown.
At Weston Green, SkillQuests like Game On are part of our commitment to future thinking and real-world learning, helping children grow as curious, capable and compassionate learners.
