Head Teacher’s blog – July 2022

Posted: 15th July 2022

In the whirlwind of busy-ness that is the end of term, all of a sudden we find we are here, at the end of the school year.

We have competed in Sports Days, celebrated at Prize Giving, enjoyed the most fabulous school productions, open days and specialists exhibition and then our Summer Celebration, a highlight to end our year at Weston Green.

It is natural at this time of year to reflect on our achievements across the year and what a year it has been. I am very proud of all we have achieved collectively. We end the year with smiles and gratitude for the many successes of the school year.

It’s always important that the school never sits still, identifying priorities, moving forward and addressing the changes we need to make, to ensure that what we offer remains relevant, engaging and forward thinking. This was recognised in our Inspection process this year and part of the reason we are identified by ISI as an ‘Excellent School’.

This year our priorities have been clear; a focus on the children learning to include more opportunities for dialogue and feedback around teaching and learning for children. Children have told us they enjoy receiving this within lessons, it helps them to understand more their own progress. There is more ownership of their learning and this was recognised and praised in our recent Inspection.

We have also focussed on the children’s well-being, improving their understanding of themselves and their feelings and emotions through our Zones of Regulation. We have taught the children to recognise the range of emotions, what these feel like and how these can shift through the day, linking this to the actions we take when we feel this way. Across the school children now have a vocabulary around their feelings and emotions which is proving an incredible tool for identification, discussion and ultimately resolution of any conversations, incidences or differences that may arise.

Our Weston Goes Green initiative has been a huge success in bringing the school community together in learning about and recognising ways in which we can all do more to protect our environment. From food and food waste, to energy use, renewables and recycling or repurposing, the children have all been involved in an exciting year. We loved looking after our chickens, Nugget and Button, were inspired by a visit from Octopus Energy and their workshops on renewable energy and enjoyed repurposing our old clothes into the most inventive and creative articles, to name but a few of the activities we have been involved in.

Already we are planning forward for the next year and are excited to relaunch a refreshed after school clubs offer, keeping some of the favourites, but introducing some new and innovative options which have a more academic enrichment focus .

We will be sharing more of our priorities for next year with you as we start the new term in September

Before then, we thank you all for your support over the year and wish all our families a restful summer break. We look forward to seeing you refreshed in September!
